is a photograph of Senator Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois. The picture
was taken by Mathew Brady between 1844 - 1860 (probably ca. 1858-60).
Known as "The Little Giant," Douglas is best known for his famous debates with Lincoln during the Illinois Senatorial campaign of 1858. Although I understand the historian's desire to preserve artifacts as they are, I've always been fascinated by imagining these images as their subjects and creators saw them when they were new - hence my interest in photo-restoration.
